	SUNDIALS For over 30 years Rome Industries has been crafting sundials as Shakesphere wrote in Henry VI, "quaintly, point by point." Each design is individually cast using the traditional sand mold process and then hand polished and buffed. You'll find that most of their sundials are horizontal or "garden sundials" which look beautiful either on a cast pedestal as a courtyard centerpiece or on an airy wrought iron base set deep in a garden. Uniqueness is the key at Rome. With over 50 different designs it's bound to seem a little overwhelming to make a decision, but let the decision process get narrowed down by thinking of dials in terms of theme, material & price point. From the whimsical to stately, the reflective to inspiring - there's something for everyone. With the exception of a few antique reproductions, these sundials are original designs that you'll never see from other companies. Most of Rome's sundials are cast in solid brass which we feel is the perfect medium, however they do offer items in alternative materials such as aluminum and iron. . Most every sundial Rome manufactures is designed to mount on their 30 different pedestal bases. The bases make an attractive and easy way to set your dial in the yard or garden and are available at a wide range of prices and styles from ornate to minimalist. Other good suggestions include placing the dial on a tree stump, log, concrete or stone base. *Brass Sundials* We choose brass for the majority of our sundial designs because it's a material without compromise. As with bronze,brass is a favored medium by artisans throughout the world. For a moderate price, brass gives us an heirloom quality sundial that we can trust will last for centuries. Naturally non-rusting, brass requires no upkeep. Simply let it age gracefully in the garden where it will, overtime, develop a lovely patina finish. Most of our brass designs have a two-toned finished with polished brass highlights over a darker patina background. This gives the sundial an aged look with a hint of sparkles from the polished areas.

	*Solid Cast Iron Sundials* In the 19th century a trend developed in Britain and America towards a more affordable alternative to bronze. Cast iron became this alternative material and was responsible for the first garden art to be mass-produced for the middle class. Everything from fountains and statues to urns were popular. Although affordable, the trade off with cast iron is that it rusts. Of course these days, the rust finish in garden art has a large following and is an important part of the French country and the shabby chic look. Some of our dials are painted with a verdigris finish and then lacquered to stave off each sundial to prevent oxidation, but these dials will eventually rust. We also make a few dials that are pre-rusted and then given a little bit of a whitewash finish.
