The attraction of a water feature often becomes a gathering spot for family and friends.

Water gardening has become a fast-growing trend, with ponds and waterfalls popping up in almost every neighborhood. Most water gardens are easy to build and don't require a lot of maintenance, giving you a simple way to enjoy the calming effect of water and wildlife together.

Water gardens come in many shapes and sizes, but for this example, we'll choose a small 4 ft. x 6 ft. x 12 in. pre-formed pond, which you can find at any specialty store or large garden center.

Once you dig a hole that is big enough to fit your pond and place it in, make sure the pond is level using a floating leveler. This will probably be the hardest part of building your water garden. Make sure you have an extension cord or some way to power up your flowing water feature. Many people put in a small water fountain in the middle or on the edge of the pond. You can even get a fountain that looks more like garden statures...of animals, fairies and everything in between.

Now, you can add plants to your water garden. Obvious choices include cattails (typhus) and water lilies for inside the pond. If you want to include lotus plants, be sure you have at least two inches of water in your pond. Most small ponds are not big enough for lotus.

To decorate around the pond, use large accent rocks - either real or main-made - in different colors to add some pizzazz to your pond. You can also adorn the edges of your pond with low, creeping plants that act as goundcover, small hostas or flowering varieties.

For a simple water garden, the only fish you would need are guppy-like mosquito fish. Although koi and goldfish are pretty to look at, they are a little more high-maintenance and you would have to create something to protect them from hungry herons, raccoons and other fish-loving critters.

Now, all you have left to do is add pavers, statues or other garden accessories around the pond for the final finishing touch. Invite your friends and family, sit back and enjoy!
